Parents should always have a role in their children’s education – make your voice heard!

The Edmond Public School District will hold two elections for school board in 2022, District 2 and District 5 on April 5, 2022.

DISTRICT 2 CANDIDATES

The candidates running in District 2 are Cheryl Williams and Courtney Hobgood.

Williams says she believes academics should be the primary focus of schools, “our children and grandchildren deserve an education that gives them the skills needed to succeed in life.”

 

Williams spoke at a school board meeting against a book called “The Glass Castle” which is on the High School reading list and contains lewd passages and inappropriate topics. 

 

Williams is a registered Republican, has voted in Republican primary elections, and has donated in support of Republican causes.

 

Williams promotes endorsements from: School Boards 4 Kids, OK2A, Oklahomans for Health and Parental Rights, The Lions Den, and DriveFor45. She is the former Vice Chair of the Oklahoma Republican Party.

Cheryl Williams is a mother and grandmother who has been involved in Edmond Public Schools for many years. She is also actively involved in her church and the Oklahoma Republican Party.

In an interview with KOKH Hobgood said, “the success of the district matters to me because it affects my children’s education” and she hopes to address the teacher shortage should she be elected.

 

In a Facebook video Hobgood says she is a Conservative.

 

Asked directly for her opinion on mask mandates and school closures, Hobgood stated that she was for the “safety of all students and all teachers” and was “willing to look at all mitigation strategies.”

 

Courtney Hobgood is a registered Republican.

Courtney Hobgood is a mother of three elementary-aged children and says she would bring a “mother’s perspective” to the School Board. Hobgood also volunteers at her children’s schools and is a regular volunteer at the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma.

DISTRICT 5 CANDIDATES

The candidates running in District 5 are Michael Grande and Marcus Jones (incumbent).

Grande is running to enhance parental rights stating, “I will make sure that parents are involved, heard, and represented in the decision-making process,” and also, “I will never support any mandate but will always fiercely support your right and decision to do what is best for your child.”

 

On curriculum, Grande pledges to, “make sure we are on a path to master the basics of education, not just push kids through a standardized process.”

 

Grande says it’s “imperative” that parents know what is being taught in classrooms and have the ability to view the “source, context, and content of those materials.”

 

In describing the role of a school board member Grande says, “I know and understand that I am accountable and must respond directly to our community, and the will of the people.”

 

Grande touts endorsements from Oklahomans For Health & Parental Rights, School Boards 4 Kids, The Oklahoma 2nd Amendment Association, The Oklahoma Conservative Political Action Committee, And Lions Den.

Michael Grande is a father of five and runs a business management and consulting company. 

Jones says it is his goal as a board member to encourage the pursuit of new disciplines for electives such as current curriculum areas including agriculture, business, and marketing that teaches beyond state standards.

 

Jones says Critical Race Theory is not taught in Edmond Public Schools (per Oklahoma House Bill 1775) and that the district has not received any formal complaints about the issue in schools. 

 

Jones believes “parents have the right to know what curriculum contains” and pledges to continue to review literature through a current process that brings together both parents and teachers.

 

Jones encourages parental involvement in the Edmond Public School District. 

 

Jones is supportive of the current partnership between the District and the Edmond Police Department. 

 

When asked about School Board meetings in Loudon County, VA, Jones stated that calling parents “terrorists” was inappropriate, noting that “we may have disagreements but I think as a society we can come together.” 

 

Jones says his campaign is focused on: reducing class sizes, ensuring that all students get the learning experience they need, support for teachers and administrators, as well as a renewed focus on the fine arts and sports at Edmond Public Schools.

 

Marcus Jones is not registered to a partisan political party and has participated in both Republican and Democrat primary elections.
